After Cane Garden Bay, we headed back to Nanny Cay (…again…). Although this time it wasn’t for a boat repair. My mother had hurt her neck and needed to see a chiropractor. She was snorkeling over to an island we were moored off of, and the surf gave her quite the tumble. The dockmaster at Nanny Cay recommended a chiropractor to us, and after a waiting a few days my mom got to see him and was feeling much better. We the solstice and Christmas in the marina. For our solstice dinner, my father cooked us a Cornish game hen each, with wild rice stuffing and a peach glaze. It was absolutely the best meal we have cooked on the boat so far.
After leaving the marina, we spent a night over on Norman island to do some snorkeling at the caves. There was a plethora of life around an in the caves. Some of the rocks in the caves appeared to be covered in fish eggs. Around another point on the island, whilst snorkeling, we spotted a spotted eagle ray. They way the swim is truly magnificent. Although much to my dismay, he seemed just as curious about us, as we him. At one point he swam directly under me, in quite shallow water. I didn’t see him coming and nearly jumped out of the water in fright, as their tails are barbed and extremely poisonous.
We then sailed to the other end of Tortola to Beef Island, and moored in Trellis Bay until a day after new years. We met up with Gypsy and Jade, two sailing vessels we met from the Caribbean 1500. We all were on the beach for a New Years celebration. There were huge sculpted metal balls, hollow on the inside, so you can light a fire on the inside to illuminate the art on the outside, and a burning man lit at the stroke of the new year. Proceeded by fireworks. Throughout the night here was music and a couple different dance troupes, including ones on stilts.
All three of us (Defiant, Gypsy and Jade), then anchored in the North sound by Prickly Pear Island and Sabba Rock. We spent a few nights going to Happy Hour on Sabba Rock, since they had Rum Punch and Painkillers for $2.50. Last Sunday most of rented laser sailboats and entered into the Bitter End Yacht Club Sunday regatta. Since all of us are used to sailing large ocean faring sail boats, none of us did very well. Yesterday Jade, Gypsy, and Wind Dance (another boat we met up with in North Sound from the Caribbean 1500 departed southwards for St Martin. Where we plan to catch up to them in a week or so. We sailed down to Road Harbour, where we plan to get some veterinarian certificates for the dogs, and to re-provision. After a night of restless sleep, as the anchorage is not very sheltered and we consistently rock back and forth, My mother and father have set into to town to begin our chores for Roadtown. Hopefully we will get it all down quickly, and will be able to head to a more comfortable anchorage tomorrow or the next day!
