    Gamestop

Before, reading, do NOT think I think this is a big deal. Because it's not. I got the game, I'm happy.

Ok, So I went to Gamestop to pick up Final Fantasy XIII-2 today. The clerk their started to ring me up, and then he plopped the collector's edition guide right in front of me.

"Dude, man, that's a NICE guide," he went on to say. He talked about how I could get it 10% off with the game, and another 10% with their power up reward deal. I told him, "No thank you."

He went on about how he would love game guides for RPGs and such, like Skyrim, and how it helped him get some weapons in the game and whatnot. While he was talking about that, he was going across the room. I saw through his conversation, though. He was picking up the case for FFXIII-2 so that I can have the gutted copy of the game.

After asking me if I wanted it again and me telling him no, we got around to buying the game and such.

Here's what got me thinking: Check this out from the Wikipedia article on Gamestop:

The company has a policy where new games upon release are "gutted."[18] This means that while sealed copies of the new release are kept behind the counter, one copy is opened and put on display to be advertised, with the game filed behind the counter. Consumers may reach for the opened copy and purchase at the counter whereupon the consumer will receive a factory-sealed copy from behind the counter. If the opened copy is the last copy of the new game, it is sold at regular price.
There were new copies of the game. Brand spankin' new. Right behind the counter all packaged up. I don't know if they were for the pre-orders, but I bet you anything they weren't. And I paid full price: $65. Even though I would have liked to have a never before open copy of the game instead of a game put back into it's package with tape on it, it's no big deal.

Does this piss you off? Do you think they have the right to do it? What do you guys think about this whole thing?

There's a reason I stopped shopping at Gamestop awhile back... They're really scumbaggy and treat their workers horribly (I mean, come on.. going into one of those places and hearing the tv commercials for anything more than 5 minutes would drive me bat$#@! insane..)

That's never happened to me.... The only opened games I've ever received at a gamestop were the ones I bought used.

If there's unopened copies behind the counter, you can just ask for one. I know the guys at my local GameStop are usually good like that.
honestly, the "gutted" games don't bug me one bit. it's mostly an anti-theft measure. it doesn't make good retail sense to have $60+ games sitting on a shelf where they can be taken, but it's also not efficient to have to individually case each game (like we had to do at Blockbuster).
Most copies of their games just went from case to disc sleeve. on rare occasion, one of the employees had played it, but their policy states that if the disc is damaged by an employee, the employee has to buy that copy of the game, and that is watched VERY CAREFULLY by management.

I got skyward sword this way. Last copy so it was gutted, but I didn't particularly care. Doesn't even bother me a little.

There's a reason why the majority of gamers have a negative impression of gamestop. I can't say I'm really surprised though. Gamestop is starting to really suffer due to the continued rise in direct downloads of games and more people moving to Amazon to buy games. They have to start doing quasi-ridiculous $#@! in order to stay profitable.

Yeah, you are probably right. I didn't think about asking because I didn't know he was going for it half way through the conversation. But yeah, it is nice that the gutted copy was in a sleeve. I saw that.

it's actually, almost ENTIRELY a theft issue.
they keep the game discs in a locking file cabinet behind the counter so that people can't just grab a pile of games and bolt out the door.
I really don't understand how this counts as "quasi-ridiculous".

sometimes you've just got to speak up. it might sound rude, but often you'll need to interrupt them if they're a bit too into their sales pitch.

I have pretty much all together stopped going to gamestop for games. 1) Due to steam I don't really need to go out and buy a game 2) I am tired of them trying to push membership sales, pre-orders and magazine orders on me any time I tried to buy a game 3) the last time I went in there I got "That girl", you know the one who dresses all slutty and flirts with every lonely bastard in the store selling subscription with her boobs all the while just talking about Halo or Gears of War, I went in to get a game not have my intelligence insulted.

The moment he mentioned loving the games guides I would have told him to get the $#@! out. Why buy a game if you are just going to read a book that holds your hand all the way through and tells you how to play?
