Red Cross: Video Gamers are War Criminals

Should video games respect international war crimes law? • News • Eurogamer.net

The International Committee of the Red Cross is investigating whether developers should be asked to better respect and reflect international humanitarian law in their video games. ...

"While the Movement works vigorously to promote international humanitarian law worldwide, there is also an audience of approximately 600 million gamers who may be virtually violating IHL," read the event's description.

"Exactly how video games influence individuals is a hotly debated topic, but for the first time, Movement partners discussed our role and responsibility to take action against violations of IHL in video games. In a side event, participants were asked: 'What should we do, and what is the most effective method?'

First comment summed it up pretty well:

Oh do $#@! off, surely there are some very REAL war crimes you should be worried about rather than pissing and moaning over how many points a kill is worth in a videogame, what's next? The government complaining over the lack of stamp duty when you purchase a house in Monopoly?

when the morning comes it doesn't seem to say an awful lot to me

So.... virtual people, who are not alive, but are virtual, and aren't alive.... should be treated with the same "humanitarian" laws as real people... who ARE alive.

I have a problem with someone setting up boobytraps and using weapons intended to maim on real people. I have a problem with REAL people killing each other no matter what, it's dumb. But virtual people? Goodbye Farcry, you can set up boobytraps. Goodbye Bioshock, there are lots of "fun" maiming-type weapons there. Goodbye lots of everything. Guess it's time for everything to be Hello Kitty Island Adventure.

Once again an idiot organization is going to blame video games for bad things happening in real life? Gamers are not idiots, we know the difference between right and wrong. We know it is wrong to go out and shoot some random person, to trap an entrance with a trip wire mine...etc. Video games are nothing but virtual images, not real life. This "investigation" is just another bull$#@! waste of money that could go do something else, but they have to use it to investigate if we are violating the rights of the games AI. I was absolutely disgusted with the video they presented, they take a beautiful song like that and pull a Michale Moore on it showing images from games trying to demonize them. I will be so glad when their generation is long since dead, then maybe just maybe this world can pull it's head out of it's ass and get on a better road than we already are.

I don't think I could've said it any better than Rhojin did... This $#@!'s been tried several times over, each time ending in complete failure. All of the money these organizations are expending towards things like this could be much better used, instead of throwing out thousands of dollars chasing fantasies.

    Also,

Goodbye just about all of the gaming industry... The vast majority of popular games (i.e. the Battlefield series, Call of Duty, Crysis, Left 4 Dead, BioShock, etc.) all involve the mindless slaughter of anyone the game tells you to kill, through whatever means you have available.

I agree with everything in this post, however, I also think it would be interesting if a game allowed people to take POWs instead of just killing a guy with like 4 health left, perhaps even give more points if you do so. For example, in Battlefield 3, you find a sniper hiding and you sneak up behind him. Instead of stabbing him or shooting him, you pull out a piece of cord and knock him unconscious and tie him up or something. So you get 50/100 points for knocking him out, and 100 for tying him up. Of course, it shouldn't be forced upon a developer to do this, it should be done if they feel like it.

Just ignore it. They've lost all their credibility as a humanitarian organization now. If they don't cut out the part of their organization responsible for this they'll end up at the same level as PETA.

That was one thing you could do in Front Mission 3 on the PSX.
If you defeated other enemies, then managed to destroy both arms, and the legs of an enemy, then surround him, then he'd surrender

The Red Cross is by no means an idiot organization. Just because they did something stupid once does not make them idiots.

The Red Cross saves thousands of lives every year. If it weren't for their blood drives I would have never gotten the blood that I needed, and I would be dead right now.
