We brightened your outlook on Friday, but now it’s time to take things down a notch. Here’s the gist of it: Jason Elia is a TV writer living in Nashville, whose girlfriend dumped him when she found out that he had cancer. But before the prognosis, he had bought Super Bowl tickets for the two of them. Now, the girlfriend still wants the tickets. That’s all according to Elia, who discussed his weird story on ESPN 97.5 radio in Houston (via NESN). Elia:
“Um, well, I had an ex-girlfriend who I could really call some curse words but I think they’re on that list that I can’t say. I bought them for her, and she broke up with me because she found out I had cancer, so …”
HOST: “Wait, wait, you’re burying the lead. She broke up with you why?”
“Because I have cancer. … She said it was too much stress for her to handle to have a boyfriend with a chronic disease.”
Elia has bladder cancer, and says his prognosis for recovery is 87 percent positive, so that’s good. He held a sort of Twitter raffle to give away the tickets (he’s more of a soccer fan), with the person getting him the most Twitter followers by Sunday night getting the prize. He tweeted late Sunday that the winner has been chosen, and he’ll announced it on Tuesday.
Why would his ex think she should get the tickets?
“She argues with me constantly every day over them,” Elia told ESPN radio. “Her argument is simple: I bought them with her in mind, so she should get them. Screw the breakup.”
At the time of the ESPN interview, Elia said the leader was a “webcam model from Las Vegas” who had collected 250 Twitter followers for him. Her secret? “She was offering free five-minute Skype shows,” Elia said.
