I was speaking more of safety than efficacy...because yeah, benadryl is only going to be evaluated for efficacy in it's label indications (allergies). Be cautious if choosing an herbal remedy. Since they aren't regulated, I would just be careful of the brand/source (like don't just get the cheapest one, but maybe a more trusted supplement brand).

I usually wake up ok after a benadry nap, but it can affect different people differently.

Also, reading up more on melatonin...I would say melatonin should be good, as it is a prescribed drug for certain sleep disorders. You may have to go through some kind of sleep study though before you are prescribed.

I have problems going to sleep too, and wake up at the slightest noise. I don't take meds or herbs, but I do sort of hypnotize myself when I can't shut my brain off. Like counting sheep. I close my eyes and imagine a circle or ball going back and forth..it has to be different from my breathing cycle, or it messes with me. and I count in my head while I do I also have to have some sort of white noise in the room..I have a fan next to my bed that I turn on. You have probably tried these things..but they seem to help me. good luck.

    Chamomile.

It is easiest to get in tea form. It is used naturally to treat anxiety.

Also works as a mild antihistamine and laxative.

Melatonin definitely has no harmful side effects, and has been tested quite a bit, which is the only reason I recommend it. That and my boyfriend takes it to sleep and it works quite well.

when the morning comes it doesn't seem to say an awful lot to me

Treat the reason you can't get to sleep, not the fact that you can't get to sleep.

When I was in school and working I was so overly stressed that I could not get to sleep. I tried all the different routes, but in the end.. dealing with the issues that cause your brain to race may be the best route. That doesn't necessarily mean go to a psychologist or anything... I went on walks and thought about the stuff that bothered me. When you confront it and think about why something is weighing on your mind, it can help you resolve some personal issues. Example: I felt guilty about how my ex and I broke up, and it bothered me. I had to contact her and apologize and hear her apologize. That helped one of the issues weighing on my mind.

    Food for thought.

From a medical standpoint, go with Melatonin. Your body already produces it naturally, but if you are having difficulties sleeping, your melatonin levels are probably off.

Fun fact: Melatonin is decreased with sunlight exposure and increased with lack thereof. Hence, while we feel more tired during the dreary winter months and more alert in the summer.

A lot of you guys have probably seen me in bawks at odd hours. I sometimes have a hard time sleeping (particularly this week)

Melatonin works pretty good with me. Takes about 20 mins to kick in for me and yes as soon as your eyes start to feel heavy or you are yawning a lot go to bed or you're gonna have an even harder time sleeping.

Valerian root...Like Mak said....TASTES LIKE ABSOLUTE $#@!!! Works well though!

Chamomile- I have a tea with this stuff, orange peel and some other goodies that make it appealing and work!

Benadryl- Ahh HELL NO!! I tried this once.....Woke up groggy, grumpy and with a major headache. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Hot Bath- While not very good to my skin during the winter, it works well if I put some lavender or chamomile scented stuff in the bath water. There's epsom salts out there that have lavender and chamomile oils infused in them!!

    Hope this helps =D
