Yes, that's right. The closed-beta start this October. No specific dates have been announced.

The only confirmed way to get keys is at either Eurogamer, or PAX.

You can see more info and read more about the game here (kotaku article)

As well, the official maps have been confirmed:

    de_dust2
de_dust – layout significantly changed (new paths)

de_aztec – minor changes to layout

    de_nuke – some layout changes

    de_inferno – some layout changes

de_train – only has one bomb site now

cs_ hostage maps confirmed, but unknown which will be returning

As great as this is, im concerned that they are going to lose some of source's flattened, anti-aliased loof that makes the game look so much more real, due to how much few 'lines' you actually see, but in this, I see more of a super bumped, over textured map. Im sorry to say, this is the route that most games take, but if you look at what halo did with their weapons with Reach, you can start so see what really needs to be accomplished: more individual polygons, with textuing used to make the surfaces different, instead of the surfaces being made of textures. This is what I really want to fix in my maps later on, but for now, I'm afraid to because of the strain on source. But the menu looks great, and the more unusual of map glitches are going to be auto fixed, so that should be a plus. For more examples of what I mean, look at Portal 2 and Half Life 2: Episode 2. All I see right now is a map that looks like one from COD, and thats sad, because I have always liked how much more 'real' the source engine has been with its 'flat' look.

I'm reserving my judgement until I get my hands on this baby. If they can stick with the right formula, im sure this will be another great CS game.

I agree, As much as the graphics themselves keep getting improvements, it really doesn't seem like map making tools themselves are seeing any huge leaps forward lately.

It all depends on Valve.. theres nothing we can really do. If they learned something from CSS and grabed the best of 1.6 and the best from CSS maybe this could turn out good. OF course if it stays dead it will be because of those players afraid of changes..
