Nevermind...
Political Animal - Putting SOPA on a shelf We're safe for the moment, but we need to focus on PIPA right now... The senate version.

no. We need to ensure that any state sponsored censorship is never allowed to take hold, in this country, or elsewhere.
And this most defiantly includes PIPA - which recently involved a surprising turn of events .
Backing down just because we seem to be out of the woods is a mistake. There are a lot of huge companies with billions of dollars in lobbying money that still stand to gain from this legislation. Do you think they are just going to back down and let it die this easily?
Laws already in place are being stretched and misinterpreted. SOPA and PIPA are bad but will defeating them really change anything?
Is it too early to declare victory?
I'm pretty happy for the time being. In a surprise move today, Representative Eric Cantor(R-VA) announced that he will stop all action on SOPA, effectively killing the bill. This move was most likely due to several things. One of those things is that SOPA and PIPA met huge online protest against the bills. Another reason would be that the White House threatened to veto the bill if it had passed. However, it isn't quite time yet to celebrate, as PIPA(the Senate's version of SOPA) is still up for consideration.
The online protests about the bill were surprising and large. They ranged anywhere from callng Representatives, companies, and senators to get them to change their mind, to actively moving domain's away from and targeting the business model of the companies that supported/lobbied for the bill. GoDaddy lost well over 100,000 domains in the space of about 10 days due to their involvement with these bills, along with other various targets. Reddit in particular has been influential in turning the tide against SOPA and PIPA, and is a good demonstration of how the Internet enables Democracy.
PIPA is less well known than SOPA, but the provisions are basicly the same. It still includes the same DNS blocking and censoring system that the original SOPA did, just without the SOPA name. There are around 40 co-sponsors of the bill in the Senate so far, with no word on how many senators support the bill in addition to that. There will most likely need to be 60 votes in the Senate in order to invoke cloture and end an almost guaranteed filibuster.
PIPA meanwhile seems to be intentionally misleading or large parts of it are missing from public scrutiny (which is how the Senate has ALWAYS operated on any kind of big issue.... waiting till the midnight hour to finalize it so that opposition to it also stays disorganized). Which means it needs to be shouted down even harder until they're willing to give a crystal-clear interpretation of it that isn't riddled with loopholes ...and knowing the Senate, that will never happen.
IOW: I think we need more articles here on PIPA now....

I'm referring to Section 202 of the PRO-IP Act of 2008 being abused to seize domain names like dajaz1.com and others with no due process for the past few years. That law is written to allow the government to seize property used for or facilitating copyright infringement ex parte, which prevents the property owner being able to contest the accusations in front of a judge before it happens.
The current administration is interpreting it to seize domain names based on the premise that a site merely containing links to allegedly infringing material hosted on other sites beyond their control is "facilitating". So far they haven't seized major sites like Google/Facebook/Twitter/Reddit but under that interpretation they can be.

Ohh, thanks for clarifying. Yeah could certainly leave some potholes on the ol 'super highway' too...
