Thread: World of Tanks Anyone?

I am not sure if there is a post lying around somewhere, but if there is one it's probably really, really old, so let's start over

So... in the past 2-3 weeks I was completely addicted of world of tanks... I spent hours playing it and I already spent 7 bucks, although it's not necessary, in fact, I still haven't used them for anything other than a few more garage slots for now.

What exactly is World of Tanks? It's a MMO where you drive tanks and shoot things. this game is strictly PvP, and there are many classes to choose from:

Light Tanks: Scouts, extremely fast, but their guns are usually weak. they are mostly made for detecting enemies and hunt down artillery.

Medium tanks: What you guys call "Jack of all trades". They have average armor and some good weapons, they also have some mobility so they can be sneaky arty-hunters or just fight in the front line.

Heavy Tanks: A lot of armor and health, their guns are also powerful. They have one weakness though, they are slow. They turn slow, even their turret (Note: This is not the gun, but rather the thing that the gun's mounted on) is slow, if a medium / light gets behind you, you are basically dead, considering if they know how to circle you.

Tank Destroyers (TD): They are the "snipers" I shooter terms. their guns have the longest range and also extremely powerful, but they don't have a turret, so they would have to turn the entire tank to switch direction of fire. They are made for defense purposes.

SPGs (Arty / Artillery): Well... you lob shells into mid air, and they rain on your enemies. They have a special mode called "sniping mode" where you have a top-down view. They have high map control, and their cannons can sometimes instant kill, but they reload slowly, and they have paper for armor. So hide them, or if you are not the arty, protect them if you feel like it.

My experience at first is a little confusing, I wasn't expecting realistic so I just spam my shells to the enemy's front, and you probably already know, I can't penetrate their armor in the front...

Here's a couple tips on the game:

1) Your gun automatically calculate shell drop, so just aim directly at the enemy in sight and they'll lob the shell for you. Also, there is auto aim where you can lock onto someone, but it usually can't hit anything anyway because it doesn't lead the target, so just aim with mouse, make sure you lead the target though.

2) The Tanks in the game have actual components for you to shoot and damage, for example, you can break the track to stop them from moving, shoot the engine to light them on fire, and if you are lucky enough, you can shoot their ammo rack and score an instant kill (it doesn't happen a lot though).

3) There is ricochet in this game, if you shoot at an enemy at a low angle (for example, shooting the side with acute angle) the shell will bounce off, just like normal physics.

4) Don't rush. Running in the open usually means death.

5) There is no respawn. In case if you died, you can leave the game and immediately join another one with a different tank. The game doesn't penalize you for leaving if you're dead. this is a great feature since you don't have to sit there to wait for the match to end, you can play another game while waiting the old one to end.

6) Do standard battles, the MatchMaker will match you to other tanks within the same tier range. For example, you will only see Tier1-2 tanks if you join queue as a tier 1 tank, this ensures you the ability to do something. (I have a friend who just started the game, went into training and bump into a tier 10 match... training is not tutorial, it's for the people to practice tank weakpoints, shells, etc.)

I might add to this list if I can think of something in the future, but for now, I strongly encourage any of you to try the game, it's free and it's quite fun imo.

Started a thread around when the Minecraft server went up so it got buried.

Some things I want to add about gameplay:

Each game you play gives you a certain amount of in game cash and experience. For the most part, experience is limited to whatever 'tech tree' you're currently playing. Tech trees are based on different tank nationalities, currently American, German, USSR, and France. You use experience points earned in each line to unlock new equipment (which is often unique to each tank) as well as new tanks. Cash is universal and is used to buy things that you have unlocked.

When you get a new tank you will likely have to unlock and buy new equipment for it, so it can really hinder you for a few games due to lack of a decent engine and gun.

The matchmaker will try to match you up with same tier tanks as best it can, but in my experience that mostly means there will be similar number of the same tier in a game. So you might end up with people a few tiers above you, to which you can do nothing. Matches are also a sort of deathmatch type game with flag areas at each spawn that can be capped to help prevent stalemates. If possible cap the flag, as you get more experience.
