    New rig suggestions

I'm looking at putting together a new computer.

    Here are my current specs:

    Code:
    Gigabyte EP45-UD3P Motherboard
    Intel Core2Quad Q6600 CPU
    4GB DDR2 RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Card
Forgot what my PSU is exactly, but it's something like 800W.
I have already settled on AMD for my next processor due almost exclusively to price. I'm not interested in an AMD vs. Intel discussion.

I would like some help/suggestions on a cheap gaming build. Is the video card is sufficient for now? My RAM seems to be a pretty big bottleneck. I thought about just buying more DDR2, but it is so damn expensive and outdated.

    Thoughts on a Mobo/CPU/RAM combo?

DDR2 is so expensive due to the fact that it isn't widely used anymore. One of the benefits of upgrading oyur mobo, you can easily upgrade ram. On average its about $30 for 8gigs of DDR3 but occasionally you will see a good sale for 16gig for much cheaper. We were able to get hel's 16 gigs of ram on sale at frys a couple weeks ago at $35 i believe.

The Tech Report has a pretty good guide on new builds with different pricing in mind (I don't have enough forum post to post a link or I would have.) Beyond that I'm probably not the best person to offer more than someone else's guide as I tend to build a new system every two years vs. piece meal upgrades.

IMO your graphics card should suffice for a while. I mean unless you really want the big dog cards. Really up to you. That card will hold through games for the next couple years easy. I currently have:
    CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II x6 2.60 GHz 1035T
    Memory: DDR3 Duel channel 4096MB
    Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5670
and I am fine with it. Sure I would like to have the cash to go bigger but...It works.

I would stick some money into an upgraded mobo and ram. Find a mobo that has a slot for your current vid card and future cards (Don't know what kind of slot it takes). Even if these upgrades mean you buy a lower end cpu to start, you can always piece by piece upgrade later. What kind of price range are we shopping in?

If you want a huge spike in performance, SSD man. One of the largest bottlenecks of a PC is the I/O of the discs. No matter how fast a standard HD is, an SSD is going to make things night and day. A 10K Raptor drive is going to get maybe 100 MB Read / Write if you're lucky (I had three in RAID 0), but the new OCZ SSD's are pushing 600 MB/s now. I'm using Intel's right now, and they are in the upper 200 MB/s read/write (Sequential). It's insane. Both my rigs have SSD's, even my laptop has one. I love it too, I just drop the laptop on the carpet like a toy, and never worry about the drive damaging... And if it's for gaming, put only your OS, games and apps on it, and use another HD for data. You can easily get a 60GB SSD for under $150 now, and below is a 120GB for $170 (after rebate) that pushes over the 500 MB/s Read/Write --

Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex 3 VTX3-25SAT3-120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

I highly recommend upgrading the HD first and for most. Then work on Mobo, RAM, and a processor.

I actually made this video at my last job to show the difference between SSD and HDD. I'm sure it's older than god's dog, but here it is for fun. Plus you can see my crazy days of BMX riding ...

Buy a new MB. Better RAM. 5770 is OK...depending on resolution. 6870s are like $160 now, and a great bang for your buck. I HIGHLY recommend pickin one up.

AMD is releasing their new 7900 series graphics card, on January 9th. So prices might sink afterwards.
