did you buy your modem, or do you rent it through your ISP?
If you rent it, call up your ISP and just tell them "$#@!'s not working" and they should either send someone over to fix it, or just replace the damn thing.
My Internet has been acting funny lately. It will randomly cut off during the day, usually in the evenings. It won't come back on until you cut off and back on the router. I've had my router in a bridge mode b/c of issues with cutting NAT off and hosting/joining a game through my modem. I've been getting crazy lag in Super Monday Night Combat for the passed couple days, up to 800 ping. I couldn't tell if it was the game or my ISP.
I decided to change back to the typical way of setting up your connection through your modem. I was having issues connecting to the Internet after that, but setting up PPPoE on my router would work. I called tech support and they said I need a new modem. They offer one for $100. I laughed (inside cuz I'm too scared to over the phone).
Basically what I want to know is what is the best way to set up a connection, through the router or modem? If you think I need a new modem then what do you recommend? My current modem is the Windstream 5200 from 2006. My router is D-Link DIR-655 from 2010. I would also appreciate any tips you have for setting up the connection to get the best performance (like is WISH or QoS any good?).
I have DSL not cable.

We bought it. We don't pay a monthly rent.
Cable Modems signals start deteoirating over time when they get old so its possible the signal strength on the modem is too low that a new modem would fix.
Well I have DSL not cable. Would that make a difference?
You could try to google your problem and see if you can find a better answer but most likely its the same.
