Welcome to dota. See you in game![]()
just got the invite and played a match.
it was interesting but honestly felt that it was easier than LoL
maybe because it was lower elo
few things that i had hard time grasping -
1. skills dont scale? not really sure on this one, was just buying rec items, not sure if they were actually useful or not
2. items cost an arm and a leg - score was like 11/2/10 or some $#@! like that, in LoL i would have had most of my high tier items, but not in dota 2 which brings me to my next issue
3. hard as hell to last hit - although this is my fault since i never played hon or dota 2 before and just picked my character in random. it was a bitch let me tell you.
4. tower aggro was confusing as hell, one second i would be attacking their tower and there were still minions, and i would get the aggro
5. such a low hp and mana. my q would drain a third of my mana and chop off a third of their hp. not sure if op or done on purpose. definitely not used to this.
i guess im just not used to the game mechanics yet. i look forward to playing with many of you guys.

1. Skills are generally not affected by items, and don't work with ap/ad scales like LoL, items only effect your hero.
2. You where properly buying "luxury" items, they cost an arm and a leg.
3. You will just have to learn, otherwise if your using a melee hero get a quelling blade.
4. Towers aim what is doing the most damage usually. But they like to take priority over the heros attacking them/and allies.
5. This isn't LoL, you don't use spells every 5 seconds, they are powerful, and supposed to be kept for teamfights and taking down a low hero, otherwise you melee them slowly to death until you think your spells can nuke them. If you still have problems, get a magic stick or magic wand.

I wish I could get an invite. D: I did the survey a long while ago, and still didn't get in this time around.
Anyway, that's not the point. Have fun, killer yoshi!![]()

1.) This depends on the hero, and the skill.
2.) Deaths really set you back, and
3.) this is why you're having trouble with #2. This will take a lot of getting used to, too, but is absolutely the most important skill to master and is one of the few that doesn't change at all.
4.) I believe it works this way in Dota2 (I still have yet to play), but depends on what you're doing. If you attack a player in tower range, the tower will switch to you (creeps do this too, and as a support, pulling the lane in different directions is helpful to whom you're babysitting as you harass the other players from different sides of the lane).
5.) Yeah, you don't use spells unless you think you can kill someone, or disable them in an emergency. If a teamfight is engaged and you're lower on mana than the other team, you are very likely to lose.

It's not becauseeeeeee
- Denying is an entirely new layer of depth of last hitting. Creeps, towers, even champions.
- Punished for map awareness harder. MIAs? Doesn't exist in Dota. (shouldn't exist in league, either.) If you're not looking at the map, you lose. Juggling runes (in river, not in sided camps), jungle in general, shops in jungle, and dynamic maps are all a new layer of depth.
- More emphasis on consumables -- a huge problem in the low/mid ELO LoL community who rarely even buy wards. Blowing bank on consumables is a big transition for players.
- Courier, splitting the costs
- Items: are not all in the same location. Buy interface takes longer to get used to. Recipes, storage, to-go shops, lane-shops, secret shops. AKA Much more information to know.
- More champions?
Regarding your numbered list:
1) Characters have attributes now. (left of your skill bar). Buying items boost attributes now. You can even level your attributes with your skillpoints (after you leveled all your skills max). Much bigger emphasis on situational items in Dota.
For example... each point in strength reacts differently to each hero. You can figure out scaling by highlighting the attribute box.
2) Items cost an arm and a leg because when you die, they're actually taking the gold out of your pocket. You get a ton of gold for CS in Dota... but since you lose hundreds of gold when you die, they seem pricey at first. Denying champions is risky but crucial in high level play. Denying 300+ gold to an enemy from a champion kill is huge. An avoidable teamkill is equally huge.
3) It isn't as hard as you think when you log a few hours in. The reason is because your projectile registers as damage at a different time than in League. I personally like league's timing better, since a projectile hitting a creep in LoL feels more crisp. It is almost like dota's auto attacks register .5 seconds prematurely. Try hitting a tad earlier, you'll be getting a ton more CS.
4) Tower aggro in dota follows two rules:
- If you/minion hits a champion, tower prioritizes you/minion.
- Otherwise, tower hits closest target
Basically, you can't sit on the turret and hit it when you have no melee minions. Your siege minion deals a $#@!load to the turret, but the range is so far you can't attack with it.
5) Most likely low ELO. Situational items, consumables, and survivability is very important in Dota. If you get fed in league, you can rape the team with just boots 2 and a few dorans. In Dota, items mean the world.
Not only that, Dota has a bigger emphasis on lane-pushing and sustain in lane. If you push, you have access to the lane shops. You are meant to push, last hit for more money, and buy in-lane. That is what the donkey is for -- to deliver items to you, allowing you to stay in lane more (which is why there is no recall). Tele scrolls are a must-have at all times.
Let me know if you have any questions! I'll play with you sometime.

I played last night... there was only two things really holding me back
The camera felt clunky (it took like.. .2-.25 seconds before the camera started moving when I moved my mouse to the edge.. i'm fiddling with the options.. but i'm not seeing anything get better.)
I have to relearn new characters/move's... I played HoN alot and I saw alot of corelations between champs (go figure) but having to recognize some of the champion skins and what they do is going to be a pain.. in addition to the shop.
Otherwise, I like it... it's got the power feeling/real damaging fights like HoN, but with the speed of LoL. You can actually see wtf is going on.. plus, when you press alt can you see where you are at anytime.. and that's probably why i'll keep playing this game for a long while...

I kind of regret giving out those three beta invites.
But I know that I wouldn't play it nearly as much as the people to whom I gave them to.
The little tricks, oh the tricks.
1. Learn to orb walk, any hero with a activated on hit effect for their auto attack can orb walk, orb walking will not aggro creeps or towers.
2. The Chicken, learn to micro your courier
3. Trees. Tangos are your friend, nothing like screwing up a gank like making your own juke spot.
4. Blink Dagger, learn who it is good on.
5. Jungle, lane pull is at :15 and :45, stack time is ~:53. Always stack before you pull and kill your own creeps before the jungle creeps. Never pull if the wave is past the side shop.
6. Wards go on cliffs, you are wasting money if you put them in the bottom of river. Also learn how to counter ward.
7. Dust is best against invis, eye should only be picked up once people can survive.
8. Learn the killer lane combos, Priestest/Sand King, Lina/Sand King/Sven, Maiden/Tiny.
9. Positioning beats items to a point, I've seen people stack treads and win the game, I've seen carries farm their Raidance/Butterfly/etc.. and still lose the game.
10. Call your MIAs during laning, there is no excuse to not call a MIA. Everyone is attempting to last hit/deny/harrass/ward/counter ward/pull/stack/buy items/kill/not die/check runes. There is to much going on to expect everyone to have full map awareness. After lvl ~6 and mid game starts map awareness is needed.
11. Pick a role and play it well. Carry/Initiation/Support obviously there are more sub roles but those three are what it comes down to, Carries kill things and clean up, Initiation are cc sponges, support ward bitches and gets the carry set up in laning.
12. Mid isn't there to win your lane for you, unless mid can make at least one kill every time they roam to your lane they are forfeiting mid and falling behind in levels/CS.
13. Don't rage, if you are losing just start to make mental notes and think about the match and how you contributed to the lose.
14. Don't cry about things being OP, learn to chain CC, not group into a cluster, focus targets, shut down farm.
This list is coming from way to many DotA/HoN games and only high lights the things that come to mind in a short time, there is much more to be said though but I'll post that some other time. Find some streams to watch whether they are HoN streams or DotA 2 streams.
