Valve will be making future changes to the way the game is run and its resources.

A near-future update (not necessarily the next one) will change the way that framerate is handled in the dedicated server. All users, especially those with very low pings, should receive a smoother gameplay experience with less jitter and more consistent-feeling latency.

Another effect of these changes is that all Orange Box (TF2, CS:S, etc) dedicated servers will run with a locked framerate, similar to L4D/L4D2. The fps_max convar will not have any effect on servers. (It remains as a client option since limiting your FPS can reduce GPU heat and overall power consumption.)

Although we don't normally give notice before updates, this is a potentially disruptive change for the server rental market, so those who currently charge premiums for "higher framerates" should probably start considering their options now.

What crap, locked Framerates? That should be optional. It better not be locked at some stupidly low framerate amount.

This is a FPS with a console for christ's sake, this is what it is all about.

I understand why they are doing this, but still.

It'll probably be locked at 66 or 67 like some servers already lock theirs and L4D/2 is locked at. It'll actually help reduce lag and will help players with a higher ping. Considering most monitors only refresh at 60Hz its perfectly reasonable, I understand people don't like to use vsync/monitorlock because it can effect mouse response but it should still be fine. It'll definitely help me because I can only receive max 60 updates per sec cause of my $#@!ty interwebs, so I'll no longer get redic choke because the server can push like 120

The reasoning behind this is because the server can only allocate so much resource. You have many higher end computers demanding significantly more data compared to others. Resulting in a bottleneck effect aka stuttering. This change will try to even the playing field and put a hard cap on data resources per client which will result in overall smoother gameplay for everyone. So I welcome the change.

And hands you are thinking of tickrate which is part of the problem but not everything.
