Backstabs are largely ping-independent. They're the only instant-hit melee in the game, making it basically an equivalent to a hitscan weapon.

Yeah, but since it's still a melee hitscan it can end up on the wrong side of the poly face it was aimed at b/c the server code allowed the collision meshes to inter-clip for a few milliseconds. (it hits the wrong side first, which also explains true facestabs)
